Project Adjouffou

For our project Adjouffou we work together with women from the local market Adjouffou. Adjouffou is a quarter in the district of Port- Bouët in Abidjan.

Our project partners sell fruit and vegetables, fish, traditional medicines, clothes, and school supplies at the market. They are the families’ sole earners. This means that they must earn not only rent, electricity, water and food, but also the school fees for the children. With their market stalls and the goods, they sell, they can only cover the most necessary costs, there is nothing left for extras or to save money.

This in turn leads to the fact that the annual school fees (per year, per child) often cannot be paid and the children therefore cannot go to school. You often meet them at the markets, trying to contribute to the family’s livelihood by working. Even if there is a legal obligation to go to school, there is no control of the compliance. There is also no financial support from the government.

We have provided some women with forms. On these forms the following should be entered: current activities, number of school-age children, projects/goals for the future and the amount of money needed. As a last point, it should be described in your own words why the applicant should be supported. The completed forms were returned to us and we then selected 9 women to work with.

We translated the completed forms and prepared them as a profile, which can be found at the end of this article.
